A beginner level introduction to wine suitable for those starting a wine career or pursuing an interest in wine. For individuals new to wine study, this qualification provides a hands-on introduction to the world of wine. You’ll explore the main types and styles of wine through sight, smell, and taste, while also gaining the basic skills to describe wines accurately, and make food and wine pairings.

In person course. Choice of in-person paper exam, or online Remote Invigilation exam.

Prerequisites

  • There are no prerequisites for WSET Level 1 Wines.

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years of age to participate.

Course Structure

  • Single day courses: 12 - 5pm, including a 30 minute lunch break. Take-home mock exam, and access to the instructor for pre-exam Q & A.

  • Online, remotely invigilated exam scheduled one week after course completion. Or a paper exam on the same date, administered in person at Barrel Thief.

What you’ll learn:

  • The main types and styles of wine

  • Common wine grapes and their characteristics

  • How to store and serve wine

  • The principles of food and wine pairing

  • How to describe wine using the WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting Wine® (SAT)

Exam Details

  • Closed book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions.

  • Before the first course session, candidates will be asked to choose either a paper exam or online exam. Once chosen, this cannot be changed.

  • Candidates who choose the online exam option must meet the requirements outlined in WSET’s RI Exam Essential Guidance.

  • Candidates who choose the paper exam option will be required to return to Barrel Thief at the scheduled exam date and time.

  • Candidates who fail a qualification will be allowed to resit the exam until successful. The fee for each resit attempt is $100 for Level 1 qualifications. If candidates do not wish to resit via Remote Invigilation, they must arrange for a paper exam in-person in Richmond, VA at a cost of $170 (inclusive of shipping to London).

  • Students with disabilities or documented special educational needs may apply for reasonable adjustments for either RI or paper exams. Applications must be conferred to WSET at least 4 weeks before the exam date.
